چکیده

We present an experimental study of nonlinear lensing of near-resonant light by a cloud of laser-cooled rubidium atoms, specifically aimed at understanding the role of the interaction time between the light and the atomic vapor. We identify four different nonlinear mechanisms, each associated with a different time constant: electronic nonlinearity, Zeeman optical pumping, hyperfine optical pumping and radiation pressure. Our observations can be quite accurately reproduced using a simple rate equation model which allows for a straightforward discussion of the various effects. The results are important for planning more refined experiments on transverse nonlinear optics and self-organization in samples of cold atoms. Mechanisms for lasing with cold atoms as the gain medium.

We realize a laser with a cloud of cold rubidium atoms as gain medium, placed in a low-finesse cavity. Three different regimes of laser emission are observed corresponding, respectively, to Mollow, Raman, and four-wave mixing mechanisms. We measure an output power of up to 300 microW and present the main properties of these different lasers in each regime.

Cold atoms from a magneto-optic trap have been used as a non-linear (χ (3)) medium in a nearly resonant cavity. Squeezing in a probe beam passing through the cavity was demonstrated. The measured noise reduction is 40% for free atoms and 20% for weakly trapped atoms. Soon after the first implementations of magneto-optic traps [1, 2], the strong nonlinear properties of laser cooled atoms were re...

Atomic number fluctuations in a falling cold atom cloud

We evaluate the effective number of atoms in experiments where a probe laser beam with a Gaussian transverse profile passes through an atomic medium consisting in a cold atom cloud released from a magnetooptical trap. Considering the case where the initial distribution is a Gaussian function of position and of velocity, we give a quantitative description of the temporal variation of the effecti...

Transport of launched cold atoms with a laser guide and pulsed magnetic fields

We propose the novel combination of a laser guide and magnetic lens to transport a cold atomic cloud. We have modelled the loading and guiding of a launched cloud of cold atoms with the optical dipole force. We discuss the optimum strategy for loading typically 30 % of the atoms from a MOT and guiding them vertically through 22 cm. However, although the atoms are tightly confined transversely, ...

Gravitational Lensing by Phase Sheet Folds

Collisionless cold matter in a Hubble flow occupies a 3D sheet in 6D phase space. Perturbations distort the sheet and nonlinear collapse leads to wraps and contortions, leaving the sheet intact with its original local phase density. Fold catastrophes in the projection of this sheet onto the plane of the sky produce line singularities in surface density which can lead to observable gravitational...
